Final attempt for Character and Environment Props 1

After the meeting with Alan I have tried to take his advice on board and simplified the design for the props down according to our design rule and the style that Dayle used for Linda, the reporter. I felt my original designs were a bit too realistic so have simplified them down trying to make them fit.

@Sean and Dayle, tell your thoughts on these ideas, are they working or does anything need developing on?

I intend to experiment modelling at some point during the week to look at these ideas three dimensionally, I will not attempt the wires yet until I see Sean's environment as they have to fit amongst it.

Spider Turnabouts

As the spider design is the only character resolved so far I have put together a front and back drawing of the baby and the mother to show how they would work.

@Sean and Dayle let me know if you think these are OK and if I can begin the modelling process!

References for Environment 'Props'

I gathered a lot of research while sketching out ideas for specific props so I have made another post containing more thoughts of how they could work visually.

Desk Lamp

The bottom example was used more for industrial use but feels bulky so as mentioned in my ideas, I like the idea of it being more flexible and pratical similarly to the top image.

Radio

The radio will be the first important visual aid that the space the characters are entering is an abandoned 50's complex and as Alan discussed in the meeting it needs to be the right radio. The top example feels too antique so the middle or bottom image is the sort of the design style I suggest because they are light and won't overtake the desk in the first shot.

Table/ desk

Looking at 1950's tables/ furniture, I found great examples that incoporate the idea of drawers down the sides and padlocks which could indicate more important or private files hidden away. It also creates the idea that the owner of the study is very official and organised.

Wires

I found some interesting references for loose and frayed wires, the top image gives a good influence as to how the 'metal webs' could be formed with all the wires looping and connecting. I also like the idea in the middle image with a destroyed object e.g. light hanging togehter by a few loose wires. This could be considered in the corridor environment.

News crew Props

As dicussed in the ideas, maybe have current technology in terms of what they are bringing with them. Also need to know how many of the crew are wearing head phones, I suggest the camera and soundman.

Lights

Lights are another feature indicating the 50's style, the ceiling lights I feel need to be simplistic but also have the essence of the lab and what they built there. The middle image almost has the idea of the spider's eye and could be where the scientist got the idea to make them in the first place. The bottom image is the sort of design I felt might work for the emergcy lights because I like the shape and the grill covering it and could imagine these placed in various points of the corridors.

Torches

Torches will be another object the news crew bring with them and again need to consider what is pratical and how up to date they would be. I think possibly something like the middle example, something that gives off enough light so that the spiders could draw attention to and has a handle.

First Sketches and ideas for props in environment/ scenes

I have taken screenshots from our animatic and started to search for references and designed potential ideas that could be used

Study Room

These are my designs for the radio, lamp and desk in There is a lot of possibilities of design for radio in terms of where dials and speakers could go. I quite like the idea of a lamp with an adjustable head so that the scientist who worked in there could look at his blue prints or papers clearly, the idea on the bottom left could fulfill this. For desks, I quite like the idea of drawers and locks fitted in somehow to show that the room is very organised and the feel that this space was once worked in.

Elevator

I chose the Elevator scene because this is a point in the trailer where the news crew's props are shown. I had a range of thoughts on this page but I think the designs that feel more current and up to date will work with the idea of them bringing the advanced technology along to get the job done successfully.

Corridors

The Corridors will be a crucial environment within the trailer and I thought about some of the features needed such as the air vent, torches, emergcy lights and the torn wires dotted around. I found a really good image of a flood light with a metal grill covering it and felt this was good inspiration for the red emergcy lights as they seem to fit in an industrail facility. Wires, I thought of maybe having some parts frayed and enterwined. The vent cover could be basic but I quite like the top left design as it could fit into the abandoned retro-looking space.

(@Adam and Sean) Development: Environmental Interpretation (Based on Animatic)

(@Adam and Sean) Development: Environmental Interpretation (Based on Animatic)

This post officially marks the sharing out of our pipeline. We can now work on individual tasks and progress smoothly. Despite the episode with my computer and the problems I am sure we are all facing, let’s do our best to create something before Thursday’s lesson with Alan.

Right, please interpret the environment based on this simple, dynamic birdseye view of the animatic. Alternate between the actual animatic and this environmental interpretation for guidance; the blue highlighted areas in the video are visible, onscreen areas which can be seen in the animatic. Any questions please leave a comment and see me during the week. I am going to revise Rick and Vincent’s character design consistency at some point. We are on the fringes of character modelling/ environment modelling, guys. Progress with full throttle.

Please share your thoughts. I need to know how you are feeling about this or else we cannot go anywhere.

Logo Design

Number 3 could be used as our concept branding. It seems out of place at the moment, I haven’t changed it at all; this was used at the beginning of our animatic. You guys agreed on the simplistic design and font. It’s definitely something to consider, or if you’re fine with the contemporary, Australian styled beach logo? That would be fine too.

(@Sean and Adam) Concept: Lady Presenter (V2)

(@Sean and Adam) Concept: Lady Presenter (V2)

A stylistic rehash of our female presenter, Linda. There are now soft and easy shapes to work with, based on my experience of getting to grips with the Maya character tutorials. This particular design has been toned down significantly with consideration given to in advance on the time it’ll take to model all three characters (Linda, Rick, and Vincent) and everything else. Studio feedback required ASAP, it is greatly appreciated. This did not take me long at all; we will definitely have three designs to show Alan tomorrow.

Inspiration for 1950's style of world and characters

I found some inspiration from comic graphics, illustration, films and cartoons to start considering styles and techniques that we could use as our rules for designing.

Obviously there is a range of examples here but this will give our group many possibilities and routes to go down. A range of ideas to discuss, once I know more about the sort of style we like, I can research and dive deeper to look design worked for that specific narrative media.
